ONEROADSTUDIO | Song Production by Chris Hawkes

Hey, thanks for checking out my studio and song production site. I want to give you a brief bit about my work and myself and would love to hear about your story and passions.

I first started recording as a young musician, on a 4track tape machine. I'd record original ideas and experiment with reinterpreting cover songs. I was just as fascinated with the musical arrangements as the sounds used to express them. My first experience in a recording studio was as a recording artist on a local compilation CD. By the time I was graduating high school, I knew I wanted to train in a professional environment and understand the process more.

I studied audio engineering at the Dallas Sound Lab where I learned about equipment, sound, and recording the ideas and performances of other musicians. Then I interned at Reel Time Audio in Denton, where I watched Eric Delegard create big sounds within a modest space using only a few pieces of favorite gear – his ears being the most important piece of equipment. Combining care for the performance and performers experience, while using the equipment to enhance and amplify their expression, created a rich and deep representation of their music.

I also started engineering for the University of North Texas music program. We'd record and document live performances from the aspect of an audience member. Some beautiful performances were captured with only their honest, natural energy. Both perspectives gave me respect for the art in engineering and producing while trying to find the balance of getting the pure performances to their listener.

The first album I recorded for another artist was partially paid for in trade. I just asked for what I needed to pull off the record: a Rode microphone. I heard the Australian mics during a test at Sound Lab and loved acoustic guitar through them. It was the first form of exchange with an artists for my recording services and it literally started with one Rode. A recording combines the unique creative directions of independent travelers, unified to shape a new path and share one road.

Thanks for reading my story! Please let the samples give you a better idea of what I value and try to help capture. Most of the demo's were produced in my own space with a modest Pro Tools DAW and a handful of mics including (you guessed it!) Rode's. But a few sounds were created remotely or in other facilities. Some of my favorite creative people have outfitted their studios with great gear and if your project would benefit from it, I'd love to setup time in their space.

I've had the best experiences and results by talking about a projects needs then finding and solidifying the budget before tracking. It removes any thought of how much time a song needs and puts the focus back on creating. If you'd like to talk more about your goals and material, please shoot me an email!
